Blogs and wikis

These are my todays good and bad blogs!

This is the bad bad example of how to keep blog running: http://www.hetihuolto.fi/blogi/
It’s local business here in Salo and it has grown lately. The blog has seen updating last year and it can be found easily from the home page. Yikes… Maybe someone said in one morning meeting: hey, let’s start a blog! And then they did. With out planning. Planning is a key to any success because then you know what to do. They started and then… Well then it just was. Lay out is also a bit… Confusing and just too much for my taste.

Here is a better way to do things: http://taloudessa.fi/

It’s a blog from Osuus Pankki. It has post regularly, it is personal and informative and easy to use. I like how there are writers from different backgrounds! Mommy stuff is hard and here is a post about that! Digi- things they got that too. The blog fits in their brand. First the layout is OP proofed. The texts link whit what they do and are interesting to their customers.

Then I went on to mungolife – Finnish lifestyle and fashion blogger.  She has been blogging for years now and is one of the most popular blogs in Finland. She does sponsored posts and has done work with Ellos for quite a while. So she does serious money with her blog and has used it to earn her living.

I didn’t need to ask why she blogs – she has told it few times before. It started as a hobby and when she got more and more followers the plus side overcame the bad. Her writings were before more on her personal life (boyfriends, parties….) and now she has chosen to write more of her style and leave her personal life outside the blog because she has cotton few haters too.

I have read her blog on and off for many years. Her writing style is… Well she writes a lot. Some people like it some people hate it. I like her photos that are high quality and well taken. Her layout is also nice and easy to use. The blog posts are regular and well made.

When talking about blogs people like different things. I like dog blogs more but I also love reading lifestyle blogs.

Wikipedia… Students love it teachers hate it. I find it useful for finding more key words or quick way to learn basics. I always remember that anyone can edit the information so I try to find reliable sources too. I used apple as an example. http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple in finish version it has little information compared to English one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Inc.

Apple has it’s own marketing tool: users. I think that someone who has loved apple has written the posts. It tells as a good apple Inc. story without scandals. Companies like that. Also the massive thing about apple is the hype that users do around it. I like apple, I use apple and I tell it to others too.

In the Internet you shud always be remembered who is the writer, why they write and who do they write to. Then you can tell are you being told everything.

Facebook as a marketing tool

I think the most important thing for a company to remember when using Facebook is engaging with people. As it was said many times in Dan Zarrella and Alison Zarrella’s “The Facebook Marketing Book” companies should engage and encourage people to engage. Companies need to publish content that make people participate but companies should also participate themselves. I think the worst thing is not to answer to customer’s questions and comments. Communicating should be two-way and conversational.

I think Ben & Jerry’s is a good example of using Facebook well as a marketing tool. Their Facebook page has over 7,7 million likes and the same page works both internationally and locally which means that in Finland we can see the posts in Finnish and they are different than seen internationally. This is a bit confusing but on the other hand it’s understandable because we have different selection of products here than for example in the US. I could see their international page when I was logged off and it had a lot of interesting content too.

But I think Ben & Jerry’s is still a good example of engaging people. They answer to many comments (at least here in Finland) even though the comments didn’t contain any questions. They post about their products, doing Fairtrade, serving ideas etc. I think the best thing on their page are the pictures that delight your news feed. They don’t post so often, only couple times a week. In “The Facebook Marketing Book” it was said that companies should consider posting once a day as a minimum but to me this could be too much and I’m one of those customers that might “unlike” a page if there’s too much content posted on my newsfeed. And it probably wouldn't even be a good idea to eat ice cream everyday - right?

Blogs and Wikis - The novel

//TL;DR (too long; didn't read)
1.     BLOGS
a)     Buffer App / Social – good blog, interesting themes, worth checking out if you are interested in marketing on social media
b)    Finnair – a lot of changes needed, uniformity above all, a lot of potential though
2.     SUCCESFUL BLOGGER
·   Colour Me! / Indiedays
-          short blogs, lots of colorful pictures, active poster, answers to every comment, amazing personality and really, really, really cute!
-          most marketing from indiedays.com main page, a little bit product placement from time to time (reviews and gifts)
-          money most likely comes from Indiedays Oy’s marketing profits since she is one of the 25 “star bloggers”
3.     WIKIPEDIA
·   Apple Watch
-          mostly information about the specs
-          both good and the bad reviews mentioned
-          lots of sources, mostly apple, also Wall Street Journal, BBC News, blogs etc.
·   Wikipedia as a whole
-          I don’t think it’s a reliable source
-          it has good points though
-          decides whether or not a thing is “real”
End of TL;DR\\

It has been a crazy couple of weeks and regardless of my best effort I just didn’t have time to write this blog before. Mostly because it was extremely difficult to find the blogs I could write about! I wanted to find Finnish blogs but I was surprised to find that not that many Finnish companies use blogs. Or at least Google didn’t show them in the first 10 pages which is pretty much the same as not existing.
1.     a)
So finally I decided to settle on an American blog. Buffer is an app that allows you to schedule posts to most of the biggest social media sites. The company’s blog https://blog.bufferapp.com/ has different categories for different kinds of posts (social, transparency, engineering and happiness is coming soon). Because there are several people that are writing the posts, it allows the company to have all those different categories and still write several posts a week and answer all the comments. The only thing missing is the possibility to further explore the different topics. You can search with a search word, but the key words are not visible when reading the blog so you have to know what you want to read about.
However, I don’t necessarily find this to be a big issue. The headlines are written in a large font and they’re accompanied by matching photos so you will quickly see what the post is about. There is also the beginning of the blog post so you can read a bit and find out whether or not you want to read the whole article. And most of the posts are interesting anyway so it doesn’t really matter which one you choose.
I concentrated only on the social category. That part of the blog focuses mostly on social media and how to use it. Their own description is “Thoughts on sharing, creating, analyzing and converting with social media.” Some of the most interesting headlines are “This is Your Brain on Emojis. Here’s How to Use Them in Your Marketing”, “Increase Engagement and Authenticity with Video Streaming in Social” and “What 5$ Per Day Will Buy You on Facebook Ads”. I think with this kind of posts they are trying to bring more value to the consumers using their app. With this blog they can attract the readers and then try to get them to visit the other parts of the blog which are mostly about Buffer as a company and a work place and news on what they are doing with their app.
The whole blog is very visitor friendly and active and promotes themselves without being too in your face about it.

1.     b)
As a “bad example” I chose Finnair’s blog http://blog.finnair.com/. It is not a bad blog really. The blog looks nice, the content is OK, there are four subcategories for the posts and a homepage where you can find all of them. It actually sounds like a pretty good blog, right? Well, it really could be! However, it doesn’t really matter if they have the subcategories or not. The amount of time between posts is ridiculous! Most of the time it is about a month, but it can be as long as two. And to make the situation even worse, there are several different people writing the blogs.
Until October 2013 they had about 3 posts per month but they lacked uniformity even then. The blog doesn’t really have one distinctive genre of topics and that’s why it is really hard to figure out what they are trying to achieve with it.
I think that the blog could be a lot better if they just figured that out. They should really streamline the blog and revive the posting schedule. The categories now are “On Land”, “On Air”, “In the Destination” and “In Finnair”. Reading through the posts I found a lot of the articles were written almost like a diary and that is what people relate to. I think they could change the categories to something like news/notifications (if there are problems with the planes/airport or something news-worthy like this article about Tapio Wirkkala’s 100th birthday http://blog.finnair.com/2015/06/02/yhdessa-46-vuotta/ ) helpful info (information about how to act on a plane, how to pack), behind the scenes (personal stories) and destinations. Then all of the posts would have some kind of a distinct theme and the posts would have more uniformity.
Also I would only choose a couple of people to be responsible for most of the blog posts and personal section could be the place where other people could share their little stories. With only a couple of people in charge, there would also be more uniformity with how the writers are shown (whether there is a name or a photo) and if and what key words they are using. With these changes and a bit more marketing I could totally see the blog gaining a lot more popularity!

2.
The successful blog I chose is Colour me! http://colourme.indiedays.com/ which is part of the Indiedays blogging site and one of its 25 star blogs. I think the blog is so succesful because the owner Juulia is such an amazing person. She is colourful (orange hair and bright clothes) and bubbly but knows not to always sugar cote the reality. She also keeps her posts short and sprinkles them with lots of photos so the reader doesn’t lose their interest at any point.
I can’t really estimate how much money she makes because she doesn’t really have any ads on her blog. The only ad I did see was on top of the page and it only showed itself once or twice in the time of about 30 refreshes/page changes. About as rarely I saw an ad that was to another blogger’s post on the site. In contrast to this the Indiedays’ main page has a lot of ads. This leads me to think that the bloggers get most of their income from Indiedays’ marketing profits. There is also a little bit of product placement in the blogs. The bloggers get stuff for reviewing or sometimes just as gifts. But I don’t know how much they actually get money for that kind of advertising.

I wrote to her and asked why she started blogging and why she continues today. This is her reply:

3.
For my Wikipedia article I chose Apple Watch by Apple Inc. The article concentrates mostly on the device’s specs and doesn’t really have any words that would sound like they are trying to market the device. The section that talked about the reviews the product has had also mentioned both the positive and the negative opinions.
Since I was told by teachers early on in my studies (3-4th grade) that Wikipedia isn’t an acceptable source for reports and presentations I have never really counted it as a truly reliable source. I use it to find the first summary of a thing I don’t know about but try to find other sources to back up the information.
There is also a humongous difference between the English and Finnish articles. Whereas I feel I can almost trust the English articles, the Finnish ones are more often than not completely off. One of the best examples I have is Turun NMKY which according to Wikipedia is only a basketball team. In reality Turun NMKY is an organization that has a wide variety of activities ranging from different kinds of sports to music to youth activities to charity/support.
I think one of the main reasons why Wikipedia isn’t considered as a reliable source is that anyone can write and alter the articles. It is a social media at its core. But I think that it is also one of the main reasons why it could be a reliable source. Anyone can find the mistakes and ask for sources, more accurate info or remove things completely if they are not correct. The sources must be indicated and they can be found on the bottom of the article and in the history tab you can always see what changes have been made and who have made them.
Wikipedia is slowly gaining respect but I think it can’t ever be a truly acceptable site to use as an only source. It just has too much of a possibility for human-based errors and prejudices. However, Wikipedia has a place next to Google as being the entity that decides whether a thing is “real” or not. If it can’t be found on google and/or it doesn’t have a Wikipedia article dedicated to it, it doesn’t exist.

If you read the whole thing.... My god, don't you have better things to do? :DD
Just kidding, I raise my imaginary hat to you in respect! :D You're a champion!

Blogging, fun or business?

I think blogs are used for many purposes. Generally people just feel to share their thoughts in public so they find blogging being the best option. There are blogs used just for fun, where the authors are posting some interesting thoughts, then are blogs where authors tries to gather audience so that later they can add advertisings and make money. But then there are companies who doing almost the same. And because blogs are easy to manage, they advertises and promote own business. So blogging can be a shorter way of selling products.
The most viewed blog in May 2015 according to eBiz MBA was Huffington Post with over 110 millions views. What makes this blog so popular, why so many views and does the author makes money from this? Huffinton post blog is so popular and has a lot of audience, because of sweetie information which many want to taste. It is a source with a lot of information about many domains and is generating and up to date every day. For this blog are working over 100 people which are gathering all this information and put it in one place. Huffington post blog makes money from advertisements and sells also some stuff.
There are all kind of blogs good and bads, generally bads are those who doesn´t have an experienced manager. To manage a good blog, needs own time and concentration. Some doesn´t have so much time or enough skills, so the blog looks like it looks. One example of bad blog could be Worst SEO blog.
Wikipedia is one of the most popular “what about it” website, from where most of companies are using it for promoting their own business. Many companies or corporation choose voluntarily to write up in Wikipedia so, that they will be more viewed and known by people.
Wikipedia and blogs could be middle ways of promoting others.

AM Blogs and wikis - wow!

 1. First of all, I want to emphasize how interesting it was for me to learn that companies actually use blogging as a tool in a way or another. When thinking about blogging, most of the people start thinking about private persons blogging or celebrities etc.
My focus was on two blogs: the blogs of Starbucks and IBM. The latter one (IBM) is the one which i consider to be the bad example of company blogging. There are too many people (IBMers = people who use IBM using their own name) posting in their own individual blogs which are all combined in one base. But the idea is still confusing in a way: the company itself remains in a shadow since they highlighted that thoughts presented in blogs are not necessarily representing IBM's views. But in positive the personal thoughts of each blogger becomes clear for readers = the people who are interested in same things (after every blog there is a list about things what the blogger is posting about, so that you can choose if you want to read it or not). However, when checking few blogs, it shows that there are many bloggers who do their posts very occasionally (even every 6 months) and the posts are quite short, so the quality is lacking.
On the other hand, Starbucks shows us the good kind of company blogging. They (Starbucks) focus on innovations giving a base where average people can share their ideas or view other peoples ideas. It is also possible to see how the ideas presented are actually been used and became reality in the "ideas in action" -section. In this way, Starbucks is using blogging as a tool for new product development and engagement. In the same time, they are receiving feedback and highlighting Starbucks' products. The blog is for especially customers (who can use a username when commenting) and there are two employees (with their first names, introduced) who are answering questions and giving feedback.
2. I chose to get familiar with the blog of Anna Vanhanen - Mungolife. It is a number one blog in the list of top blogs by iltasanomat. The blog is the sixth most read blog and it has over 4 000 subscribers and about 6 400 readers per week. I believe her blog is successful because of the fact that every girl and women can find something interested in it: there sections about fashion, food, travel, beauty.. It is clear that there are product placements and also a lot of ads in the blog. So I would guess that she is making something out of it! She is actually coming with the idea to create a website where se could rent her clothes and expand it so other bloggers could do that there too.. So she has the ambition to doing business in this way at least! I did comment on her latest post but it's "awaiting approval". I'm not sure what that means.. And i actually tried to send her email and ask some further questions about her blogging, but her email mentioned in the blog seems to be the wrong one since the email can't be send.. :( My thought on her blogging though, based on her posts, is that she started blogging because of the fact that she's really ambitious about fashion and is a good writer so maybe she just wanted to share this as a hobby with other same kind of people.
3. I decided to comment on gefilus-article in wikipedia. I think wikipedia is a great in a sense of democracy and freedom of speech but as a base for information it usually lacks, of course depending on the case. When checking the gefilus-article there seems to be quite reliable information due to the source mentioned in the end. Actually by that you can see if you can trust that the article or not. However, it is difficult for me to say how strong the fact is since I'm not a specialist in that field. If you want to be pessimist enough you can also question if Valio is putting some info there for its own benefit because Valio was introduced quite strongly.

Blogs and Wikis

This post is about blogs and wikis. Our task was to analyse one good and one bad blog, introduce a successful blogger and find an article in Wikipedia that is not so neutral.

Company blogs: a good and a bad example

I chose Taloudessa.fi as an example of a good blog. It is a blog of Finnish bank and insurance company OP-Pohjola and it was actually chosen as the winner of “Finland’s best corporate blog 2014”. I haven’t ever read it before even though I’m OP’s customer but when I read quite many posts and browsed it I understood why it has been chosen as the winner. Taloudessa.fi has many bloggers, overall 31, and the bloggers work in digital marketing, sales, management, investment etc. so most of them actually work for OP. There is also a brief presentation of all of them. I think that the blog is for both private and corporate customers. Probably because of so many bloggers the blog updates really often which is good and keeps up the interest. I think one of the best sides of this blog is that it is not all about marketing their company. Of course they do write about their services sometimes but there are for example many posts about leadership and wellbeing in work. Quite many posts have also comments and bloggers have also answered to them which also makes it a good blog.

It was surprisingly hard to find a bad company blog. I chose to analyse the blog of a travel agency called Lomamatkat. I wouldn’t say this is a bad blog but to get better they should do some improvements. Bloggers who write the posts are travel agency’s guides who present and write about their current location. When reading the blog I felt like this blog was all about marketing their holiday destinations and different trips. It would’ve been nice to also read for example about travelling overall, tips how to pack or choose your destination etc. The posts haven’t got many comments either so I think the posts could be more conversational. I have to admit that reading this blog made me feel travel fever so on the other hand I guess their goal is fulfilled but I won’t still end up as their regular follower.

Successful blogger

I chose this blog called L.A.Madde. This is one of the blogs that I like to read because I like traveling blogs and she lives in Los Angeles and works as a flight attendant and a photographer. She was previously a blogger for Finnish Cosmopolitan and now she is an independent blogger so my assumption is that the makes money with the blog. I think she’s successful because she lives in California so everything she does is different than we have here in Finland and she also takes beautiful photos.

I asked from her in one of her posts why she’s blogging but she hasn’t answered yet. I will be back if she answers it.

Doing business in Wikipedia

I think I found a good example of using Wikipedia in marketing. The article of Finnish company called Myllyn Paras tells a lot of basic company info but when you read especially the products-part the text sounds a bit like an advertisement and not so neutral. The text looks like it is taken straight from the company’s website but I of course don’t really know who has written it.

I use Wikipedia a lot to get basic information about something but I wouldn’t use it as the only source if I needed reliable facts.

- JennaEAD first > http://www.slideshare.net/…/8-steps-to-starting-a-company-b…> http://www.slideshare.net/…/ways-to-keep-your-company-blog-e! What's the purpose of the blog? Is it used for informing or marketing or for something else? For whom? Who in the company is creating the content? Does the person use his / her own name or professional identity? All these facts and many more are usually discussed when the company is making a plan for a blog / wiki.
2. Find a successful blogger who has lots of readers and followers and receives lots of comments. Why it's successful? Does the blogger make serious money with the blog? Comment the bloggers posts and ask why he / she is blogging.Remember to link this blog to your course b3. Doing business in WikipediaMany say that Wikipedia is a great project but not a good source of information becuase it includes so much material which is not neutral or has marketing purpose. You can either comment the example I have chosen http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gefilusind your own example of a text that introduces a company / brand / product. My Use Of Social Media

I will tell a bit about my social media history first.
I´ve started using social media through mIRC program when I was about 12-13 years old. mIRC was an amazing innovation that came on the public PC´s desktops near some old games, My Computer and Recycle Bin. I learned how to use it so I begin to chat with people. I was so amazed what an easy way to get to know new people. So little by little the technology has advanced and appeared more social web programs like Yahoo Messenger, hi5…, but my roots in social media are starting from mIRC.
Nowadays I´m using social web pages like Facebook and LinkedIn, and applications like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. I will try to talk about Facebook and to share some reasons why I do what I do.
Facebook I use since 2007 and in that time I was quite active till 2011. I´ve uploaded many pictures and videos and I´ve posted and comment a lot. I´ve started to be more and more interested in what people uploads and shares. There has started a “competition” who gets more Likes to own pictures and I had amazing fillings when I got over 100 Likes. I´ve started to upload more pictures and share thoughts that I had or I liked to share. But all of this until an certain point when I realized that some people doesn´t get so many Likes, other are commenting negatively to their pictures and posts, ore someone is publishing some embarrassing picture about some friend. People started to get funny and well known by pushing other people down and tried to get better picture about themselves through laughing about others and making fun. Another problem what I realized was when I saw people publishing pictures from where they travelled, about what they bought or inherited, pictures through which they started to get more proud of themselves. Others seeing this, started to be jealous, to hate and to try to protect their Ego. So because of these problems, I realized that Facebook can be a very good communication and business tool, but also bad on the other way. So I try to have a decent profile which will inspire seriosity and I will try to be careful what I´m posting and uploading, remembering that what I do is almost public. So my use of it is to communicate, to see information about others and keep contact with friends and family.
In my private I use social media to communicate with friends and to see pictures and information about them. In studying life, I use it in almost the same way: to communicate and do school stuff faster.
Usually my social media use takes about two hours a day. During this time I check my profile, I update it if needs, I just look what other posted or I communicate with friends. When I feel that I use too much time (over 30 min) just on looking other posts, I feel so bad because that time is lost (excepting when I learn something). But anyway I try to use my time as productive as possible and to loose less. Social media can easily still time! Try to gain just what you need.

Thanks,
Gabriel
